It’s a question many of our customers at Hidden Haze Smoke and Vape have asked, especially when planning a trip or heading to a concert. The short answer is: yes, a disposable vape will almost certainly set off a metal detector.
While a disposable vape might look like it’s made entirely of plastic, it contains several key metallic components that are easily detected by modern security equipment.
What’s Inside a Disposable Vape that Triggers an Alarm?
The reason these devices get picked up by a metal detector is simple: they contain metal. The two main components are:
- The Battery: Every disposable vape is powered by a lithium-ion battery, which is encased in metal. This is the most significant metallic part of the device and the primary reason it will be detected.
- The Heating Coil: The coil that heats the e-liquid is made of metal, often stainless steel, titanium, or nichrome. Even this small piece is enough to trigger a sensitive metal detector.
The sensitivity of the detector and the size of your vape can play a role, but it’s not a risk worth taking. Security devices at airports, stadiums, and government buildings are designed to be highly sensitive and will pick up even the smallest metallic object.
What You Should Do
Attempting to “sneak” a vape through a metal detector is not a good idea. Instead, transparency is your best bet.
- At the Airport: The TSA allows vapes and e-cigarettes in your carry-on luggage only, not in checked bags. This is because of the fire risk posed by lithium-ion batteries in a plane’s cargo hold. When you get to the security checkpoint, place your vape in the bin with your other electronics, just like you would with your phone or laptop.
- At Venues or Events: Check the venue’s specific rules on vaping devices beforehand. If they are allowed, be prepared to place them in a security tray for inspection. Being upfront can save you a lot of hassle.
At Hidden Haze Smoke and Vape, we believe in being prepared. Knowing what to expect when you encounter a metal detector can help you avoid any unwanted delays and ensure a smooth experience.
